A group of LDS scholars has created a unique website, Mormon Scholars Testify, to provide themselves and their colleagues a vehicle for publicly expressing their views about the Gospel of Jesus Christ and about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
One of the unique characteristics of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is its emphasis on education and scholarship. Interestingly, studies have shown that among Latter-day Saints, higher levels of education are strongly correlated with higher church attendance, and higher levels of devotion.
In LDS scripture, Mormons are encouraged to study and learn. In the book Doctrine and Covenants, a book considered to be a collection of modern day revelation from God, it says:
“And as all have not faith, seek ye diligently and teach one another words of wisdom; yea, seek ye out of the best books words of wisdom, seek learning even by study and also by faith…” (D&C109:7)
To date, detailed personal expressions of faith have been recorded by more than 100 individuals, representing sixty-plus organizations and institutions of learning located throughout the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Australia.
Among the exemplars of learning and spirituality are names that many of my readers will recognize: Gerald Argetsinger, Kristine Hansen, Philip LaFleur, and Peter Wöllauer. Others will soon be joining them.
I am delighted and immensely proud to count among the witnesses several of my friends, colleagues, and memorable teachers of years past.
