Another Christmas season has arrived — and with it, a new edition of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir’s annual Christmas Concert. As with previous installments, this year’s concert was performed before a live audience at the Conference Center in Salt Lake City one year ago. It became available on DVD earlier this fall, and the entire concert will be broadcast nationwide later this month on the Public Broadcasting System. This year, the Choir was joined by popular singer David Archuleta and the English/American actor Michael York.
In the following segment, the concert’s spectacular opening processional is performed by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, the Orchestra at Temple Square, the handbell-wielding Bells on Temple Square, and a small army of dancers whose energy and spirit will leave you smiling – and quite possibly breathless. Glad Christmas Tidings!
The Mormon Tabernacle Choir’s new recording, Glad Christmas Tidings: Live In Concert includes an attractive sampling of traditional carols, classical pieces, and newer repertoire. The album, recorded at a live performance in 2010, opens with A Christmas Roundelay, a new work by Mack Wilberg, in which While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks by Night is embedded in rhythmically catchy original music with a distinctive flavor of western Americana. It is available on DVD and Blu-Ray, and on an audio CD.
